Day one: no diapers

Day one, no panties for either Sydney and Lior was outstanding! Both girls started the day by pooping and peeing on the potty. They were so excited! They had a very successful morning at home playing in their big girl panties and when it was time to leave the house everyone peed in the potty and willingly put on their diapers for the car ride we were about to take.
When we arrived at the playground the girls tried out their new pink potty and whipped off their diapers without hesitation and told me every time they had to go when we were playing. Lior had a poopy accident on the playground but they told me every time they needed to use the potty. Sydney managed to make it through the day without an accident. Unfortunately, Lior might have some sort of stomach bug because she pooped a lot today and did not always make it to the potty. She was disappointed about her poopy accidents but was absolutely thrilled by her successful day in big girl pants. Sydney is telling anyone who will listen that she "pees in the potty".
I told Matt to gear up for day two tomorrow because I am sleeping late and laying on the couch while he shuttles them back and forth to the bathroom.

Sydney and the potty

Sydney is getting the hang of it. She was dry the whole day at school. She told the teachers every time she had to go and she went. She is so excited, when we called Matt after school she had a huge smile on her face when she told him "I peed on the potty at school Daddy!!" She even woke up from her nap dry, even though she was wearing a diaper. Not that I expect her to stay dry while she is sleeping. Now we just need to get the poopy in the potty all of the time. I am even going to try her out of the house without a diaper tomorrow.
On Wednesday we went to the store and bought two portable potties, one for the car and one for the diaper bag. When I put the cute little pink potty on the floor and asked the girls if they would use it both of them pulled thier pants down and were ready to rip off their diaper right in the aisle. I started laughing and told them to put their pants back on and put the potty in the cart. I took the pants around their ankles as a positive sign that they would use the potty.
Lior is also using the potty and seems more willing to use the public restrooms we encounter when we are out. She often resists wearing the "big girl" pants and cries for a diaper. She does not get the diaper when we are home and when I let her run around naked she does just fine.
I just read on-line how some kids become interested in using the potty as early as eighteen months. Maybe since Jordan does not realize she is fifteen months old she will be potty trained by the time "Yogurt" gets here!

Sleep

There has been a lot of discussion about sleep lately. I have been reading about other people struggling to get their multiples down for a nap, my friends have been discussing it and I have been trying to get our girls to sleep at home. Matt and I have been discussing different strategies to get our girls to sleep "when the light is on outside".
I have always had good sleepers. When I was pregnant the only "baby" books I read were sleep books. I wanted my babies to be children who slept. When they came home from the hospital they were on a schedule and we stuck to it and the girls slept. As they grew the schedule was adjusted and the girls slept. We always had a bedtime routine dinner, bath, playtime/bottle/sippy, reading books and bedtime. I think it is this routine that has made bedtime relatively easy because the girls knew what to expect and no matter what changed (like climbing out of the crib, toddler beds and big girl beds) the routine stayed the same. Bedtime is an enjoyable time for us, the girls look forward to bed time and going to bed. On days that there is no nap bedtime is often harder because the girls are so tired they can not function.
I believe that children need sleep and a lot of disruptive behavior, temper tantrums and attention problems are directly related to sleep issues or lack of sleep. I see it in all the girls when their sleep is disrupted and I see it in other peoples kids when they are pitching a fit. I recently spoke to a woman whose daughter is the same age as the big girls and was shocked when she told me that if her daughter napped she was up until after midnight bouncing off the walls. I do not know what I would do if I had a child who was up until midnight. I think I might be the one bouncing off the walls. Then Matt reminded me that we would never have a child who was up that late because we taught our children to calm themselves down and sleep.
So why is nap time such a mess? Nap time is a mess because I was not consistent with the routine inside the house. Now that has changed and I have taken back the control, for the most part. I have separated Sydney and Lior because they just can not resist playing with each other when the light is on outside. Lior is able to fall asleep as long as she has her doggy. I let her fall asleep laying on the couch. Sydney is another story, if there is a toy to play with she will play with it and she can not calm down enough to go to sleep. Right now I lay down with Sydney in my bed and we both fall asleep. I know falling asleep with Sydney in my bed is a mistake, she should be sleeping in her own bed in her own room but Jordan is asleep in the room next door and the girls wake her up.
Jordan needs her nap and I want her to get her nap, uninterrupted every day. When the girls bang on the wall to get a reaction from me, it wakes Jordan up and she can not go back to sleep so my solution is to keep the girls downstairs and away from Jordan. I need to get some different shades for the girls room so that it will be darker and I will try and transition Sydney into her room for nap time once we get into a routine. Right now everyone is sleeping for nap time, including me, which is not a bad thing. It could be better, I would like Sydney to sleep by herself and I would like Lior to fall asleep without the television on. Time will be the biggest test and it will all change when the new baby enters the picture but for now it is working and we are sleeping soundly.

Weekends

I think I love weekends. I know I love weekends. I wish the weekends were longer. The girls love having Matt around during the day and if truth be told I do too. It is nice to have someone around to do the heavy lifting, change a few poopy diapers, and bring big kids to the potty. It is also nice because we were able to divide and concur during nap time and everyone took at least a two hour nap on Saturday, in the house.
On Sunday Matt let me sleep until ten. Doesn't that sound wonderful? Matt thought he was really wonderful when he let me sleep that late and did not hesitate to remind me just how wonderful he was. What he forgot was that Jordan woke up at four forty five and needed to cuddle her mommy to go back to sleep. She finally fell back to sleep a little before six but was very restless and kept waking herself up to check that I was still there. I could not sleep comfortably with Jordan laying on me for several reasons including very bad heartburn. At seven fifteen Matt rolled over and I asked him to take a wide awake Jordan so I could get some sleep. He said he would try and sat her on the bed and let her watch TV. The next thing I knew Jordan was crawling all over me saying "Mommy, Mommy" and pointing to the dog saying "Kaya, Kaya". Needless to say I was not going back to bed while she was awake and Matt was in no real hurry to wake up. When he did he put Jordan in the swing and went back to bed and she managed to fall back to sleep and thankfully I did too. I got a nice two hour nap to make up for the three hours I spent up with Jordan. Thank goodness she decided to wake up on a Saturday night and I was able to get a little extra sleep.
While I slept Matt made pancakes for the girls, managed to keep them out of diapers, and peeing on the potty. They love having him home to play with and it was extremely evident when I walked out of the bedroom and into baby jail because nobody was excited to see me. Nobody wanted to sit on my lap to read a book and nobody wanted to give me hugs and kisses. They were too busy lavishing all their attention on their daddy!

He is one funny guy, who loves to play with his little girls. Lior thought it was very funny to take put her head through the hole with her daddy.

Sydney was thrilled her daddy was around for climbing trees.

Jordan thinks he is useful for photo oportunities but does not think he moves fast enough to capture the moment.

Baby update

Much to everyone's surprise, including mine, I do not have gestational diabetes. The doctor still wants me to watch my sugar and carbohydrate intake but I do not have to go to the specialist. Hooray, no specialist for me. I am just thrilled that I will not have to try and schedule another doctors appointment in addition to going to the regular OB every two weeks. The only down side is that I will probably not get another ultra-sound which is unfortunate because it is always nice to see the baby.
The OB did say we could schedule the c-section during my next appointment!!! The end is near and in two weeks we will know when this little baby will be making its grand entrance. Unless it decides to come early and screw up all our plans.

Who likes pizza?

While we were parking the car down town tonight Sydney asked "We going to a restaurant?" When we told her we were, she replied "We going to sushi?" and Lior piped up "Yeah! We going to sushi!" We told them we were not going for sushi but pizza and they were more than a little disappointed, "Oh, we not going for sushi..." We thought they would be excited but I guess we have exposed them to good food one too many times, and now we can not afford to take them to the restaurants they prefer.
Needless to say they were not very happy with their pizza and salad and spent the meal painting their pizza with salad dressing. When we were leaving I asked the girls what they liked better pizza or sushi. Sydney replied instantly and said "I like sushi better." I am going to have her call my dad in the morning because he likes sushi better than pizza too!

Old mommy

Tonight during dinner Lior said "Mommy you old like Kaya?" Do you think she is trying to tell me something? We are always telling them that Kaya is old and they have to gentle with her and that she is too old to climb the stairs but why did she ask me if I was old like Kaya?
Could it be because their father is constantly saying he is too old to do something? Or perhaps it is because there have been several "old" comments thrown in my general direction because I am just not as fast as I used to be. So thanks Matt for planting the seed in our children's heads that I am old. Maybe I am too old to do the laundry?

Nap time

I love naps, I remember when Sydney and Lior loved their nap. I think it was when they were still sleeping in cribs. Once they started climbing out naps became more difficult and then my Danny and his family came to visit and they started napping in the car. Once they left I attempted to have them nap in their beds but they were far to busy playing with their dolls and books to nap, so I encouraged them to nap in the car. Since I can not sit home this seemed like a logical solution and Jordan was very happy napping in her car seat.
We would start our day off at about ten, do something and then the girls would fall asleep in the car and I would have about two hours of peace and quiet. Sometimes Matt and I were even able to have lunch at his office while the girls slept. On several occasions I parked the car in front of the offices bay doors and took a nap while Matt watched the car.
Now that the girls are in school two days a week getting them down for a nap is increasingly difficult. I have decided that it is very important for Jordan to start sleeping in her crib, so naps in the car are becoming a thing of the past. With a new baby coming it is going to be very important for her to start sleeping in her crib at the same time every day. The tricky part is making her stay awake until after one every afternoon when she really needs to nap at eleven. I am trying to keep her busy by running errands that involve getting out of the car. It seems to be working and she is getting a very good nap every day in her crib.
The big girls are another story. I have decided that they can not be in the same room for nap time. Lior and Sydney will play non stop. On Sunday, I layed down in our bedroom with Sydney while Matt layed down on the couch with Lior. After about twenty minutes both Sydney and I were out cold. After about two hours Matt was suffering from a concussion and nursing several bruises and neither of them had slept a wink. On Monday I took Sydney into our bed at nap time and Lior sat in baby jail and watched twenty minutes of Cinderella while Sydney and I slept. While I was laying with Sydney I heard Lior yell out "Jordan, Sydney come play with me", "Mommy come play with me", and "Hello, I in here" to name a few. Needless to say she did not nap. I of course felt incredibly guilty because I was not cuddling her to sleep.
Today I tried to lay down in bed with both of them after school but it did not work because Lior did not want to sleep. "It still day time, it not night time, the light is on outside..." and on and on. Even Sydney got in on the action and started to complain, although she did offer to cuddle Lior several times. She even had Lior put her head down on her belly and stroked her hair for a few seconds. Lior just could not calm down enough to sleep so she wound up back in baby jail, alone. I would like to say that Sydney went to sleep but she did not and spent the rest of the afternoon extremely cranky.
This weekend I am going to keep the girls home to nap and try to figure out a way to get all of my children to nap at the same time like they used too.

It is all about the M&M's

There has been a lot of things happening lately. Jordan has given up the bottle because we decided either she gave it up now or we would struggle to pull it out of her grasp when she was two. She has not even asked for it and it has been almost a week. She was more than ready and now she only wants the new "big girl" cups that are designed for two year olds and she drinks out of it like a champ.
Jordan has finally cut two of the three molars that have been threatening to poke through her gums. Her gums were so sore it hurt to look at them. Now we just have one more tooth on the brink of popping through and we may have a small break before the rest of the teeth decide to make an appearance.
Sydney has made great strides in the potty training department. On Sunday she pooped on the potty which is just amazing because she has all but refused to step foot in the bathroom when she has to poop. She has tried to poop on the potty every day since but has had no success in that department. Her success is in the other department, Sydney is just wonderful when it comes to telling us when it is time to go to the bathroom and making it there on time. She is doing such a great job that she went to Target today to buy more big girl panties because she is going to school tomorrow in panties. She is very excited and can not wait to go to school in the morning. I just hope she feels that way in the morning.
Lior is doing a little better than she was over the weekend. When she is trying to keep up with Sydney and excited about getting M&M's she does not have accidents. I am not sure she is fully aware that she has complete control of the whole "peeing thing" but she is trying. Lior also pooped on the potty today and was very excited about it. She called Matt and left a message on his machine at work telling him that she went "poopy on the potty". Matt was thrilled to get the message, she was just so excited! She also went to Target and got to pick out new panties because we are not wearing diapers in the house at all anymore.
Jordan would like to start potty training because she can not keep her pants on. Every time she starts pulling off her pants she starts screaming "diaper, diaper" because she wants to be just like the big kids. Right now I am trying to keep the diapers on her and she seems to be very happy getting an M&M or two any time one of the big kids does something on the potty.

Potty training

I have been really focusing on potty training the girls because they seem ready. I think Sydney is more ready than Lior because it is very rare for her to have an accident. Lior does not want to wear a diaper but does not seem like she can hold it the way Sydney can. Lior came running up to me today screaming that she wanted to use the potty while the pee was running down her leg. When I told her to stop and finish peeing in the potty she looked at me like I was nuts but tried to sit on the potty when she was done peeing on the floor. I will tell you she was very happy when I put a diaper on her for nap time.
Sydney had one accident today but that was my fault. I left her in baby jail while I took a five minute break and did not insist that she use the potty before I took my break. She and Jordan had a grand old time splashing in it until I came out and started yelling at them to stop stomping in the pee. I am just no fun and really hurt Jordan's feelings because she was just having such a good time!
I have learned an important lesson in potty training. You can never have too many pairs of "big kid pants" because we run out every day. Lior did go through several pairs today but I did four loads of laundry today and every load had panties in it. Sydney likes to change her panties every time Lior needs a new pair. I argue sometimes but for the most part I try and get Sydney to wear a discarded pair when she is not looking.

Before and after

Sydney before her haircut and a daddy doing her hair.

Sydney after.

Lior before,

and after

Jordan, just because being able to take off her jeans and shirt is not enough.

A very long day

Today started extremely early for me, especially after a very rough night. Lior and Sydney both woke up at eleven screaming and Lior continued to scream on and off for the next forty five minutes, until I took her downstairs, at Sydney's request. I could not figure out why she was screaming but she was and she wanted medicine but because she could not tell me what or where she hurt I refused. She calmed down the second she hit Matt's pillow but stayed awake for at least an hour watching television. Once Lior left the bedroom, Sydney was able to go back to sleep with ease because she was cuddling her daddy. Matt came down stairs at four and put Lior back in her bed. This is not a habit I want to continue, we have never let the girls sleep in our bed and I do not want to start now.
I had a three hour blood glucose tolerance test today which required me arriving at the lab at twenty 'til eight. By the time they drew blood the first time it was eight forty and I was very hungry and I had three more hours until I could eat. Drawing the blood is a major inconvenience because I know I am going to fail the test and have to see the specialist but the insurance company requires it, so I starved all morning long.
When the test was over we piled the girls in the car and headed up to Palm Beach Gardens for shoes and a haircut for the girls. Shopping for shoes is a major undertaking and one that I will NEVER tackle alone. I need Matt to chase those kids all over the store and keep the kids busy while I work with the shoe sales person. Once the girls have their shoes on Matt lets them run out of the store and through the mall to test the new shoes out. It really is a sight to see, Matt running after three little girls wearing two different shoes running in three different directions. The girls were thrilled with their purchases, especially Sydney who wound up with a pair of sneakers and a pair of sandals. Lior continued to amaze us because once again she went to the store excited about buying a pair of sandals and refusing to get them once she had the opportunity because they hurt her feet. She was very happy with her sneakers because "they don't hurt me mommy". Even the sales person commented how mature she was to tell us that the shoes hurt her feet. By the time we left the store I was completely exhausted, Sydney was dripping wet, Matt was ready for a nap and the sales person was in desperate need for a cup of coffee.
But we were not done with our day, we still needed to go to the "princess store" for haircuts. When we got to the hair place I realized I should have made an appointment but they were able to take the girls at five, so we waited. They took the girls one at a time and Sydney decided that Lior should go first and she sat in the stroller and watched. Lior was a little upset when I put her in the chair but stopped crying when three little girls dressed in princess dresses came over to watch her and was fine for the rest of her time in the chair. Half way through the cut Sydney decided she was ready and when it was her turn she climbed right into the chair and got her haircut like a pro.
The girls looked beautiful and were very pleased with their new haircuts.
When we got home and asked Lior what we did today her face lit up and she said "we went to Publix". She is right we ended our day at the Publix GreenWise market where we ate dinner. After buying shoes and getting haircuts at the "Princess Store" I was surprised that a trip to Publix was the highlight of her day. We really thought it was the best part of Jordan's day!

Me & my guy

On Tuesday when I was dropping the girls off for school I noticed a sign about Me and My Guy night the following night at school. I knew that Matt would be very excited because he has been working day and night and has not had much time to spend with the girls. I was right, he was very excited and rearranged his schedule so he could attend with the girls.
The girls were not as excited as Matt was, but I managed to convince them by the time he got home that going to school with daddy was going to be fantastic. I was right. The girls had a great time with their daddy. I would not know what a great time they had because even though I had Matt take the camera, he did not take a single picture. He did bring home a picture of him with each of the girls in a frame the girls made. The girls also drew a picture of him and answered several questions about their father who apparently makes good coffee and cheese and gives good hugs and kisses. They painted Matt's feet and their own and made foot prints on paper which is being laminated and sent home. Lior is still talking about getting to paint her daddies feet. Sydney was so excited when she got home that she did not even want to sit with me and read a book when she got home, she only wanted her daddy!
I realized what a good time the girls had when they walked in the door and were covered with paint. I rushed them into their nightgowns and in retrospect I should have thrown them into the bath tub because they were just filthy but I wanted them in bed so Matt and I could eat dinner. It took Sydney a very long time to go to sleep because she was just so excited. Everyone had a great time and Matt can not wait for the next special night at school.

Our weekend

This weekend we took the kids to Gumbo Limbo to enjoy the sea turtles. We arrived at the park forty minutes early and discovered that there is a little park right on the intra-coastal where we could sit and watch the boats. It was just beautiful and the breeze was just fantastic. The girls loved looking at the boats and throwing pretzels into the water to feed the fish. Matt had several small heart attacks and emptied his pockets of all electronics just in case he needed to jump in to the water after one of our very daring children.
We kept Jordan in the stroller because had she been given the opportunity to roam free she would have been swimming!
It is amazing how much she wants to be just like the big girls and tries to do everything they do. She climbed onto a bench and looked off into the water with her big sister. While she was climbing I reminded Matt to keep an eye on her because I was afraid she was going to fall off. He reminded me that Jordan was "two" and just fine without any help.

And we will call her yogurt

My husband let me know today that I was very far behind in my blogging today and I needed to update. Apparently I have only had four entries this month and that is not enough for my loyal fan. Maybe if he remembered that both Sydney and I were sick this month he would be a little more forgiving. But I will blog tonight in his honor because once again he is working late and will not be home to see his little monkeys before they go to sleep.
Speaking of the girls sleeping, they are not going down well tonight because they want to see daddy NOW!!! They do not want to wait for him to come home from work. I believe that it is just a new tactic they are using to prolong the bedtime routine. I am about to go back upstairs to get them back into their beds and stop the constant giggling. I am glad they are having such a good time together and playing so beautifully but I would rather have them put their cute little heads on the pillow and go to sleep!

We have been doing a lot of talking about the new baby with the girls lately. Jordan likes to sit on my lap pull up my shirt and point to my belly and say "baby, baby, belly" and laugh. She will also kiss my belly when the mood strikes her but most of the time she is content lifting up my shirt and pointing. Sydney is pretty quiet about this new baby. She knows there is a baby in my belly but is not really talking about it. She has told me she will help me change diapers but I am not counting on it. Lior has been very vocal about the baby and has a new name for the baby almost daily. Last week when you asked her what the new babies name was she would smile and do a raspberry. Yesterday the babies name was Belle and today she named the "girl baby Yogurt and a boy baby Sydney Shoe". The sad part is Matt and I are having the same kind of luck naming this baby, neither one of us has a name in mind that we are just in love with and my husband being who he is seems to think we have all the time in the world to name this baby. I try to remind him, gently, that this baby is coming with or without a name so we should at least have a short conversation about it!

Photo update

I have pictures that I have left on my camera for the last two weeks. If you know me, you know that that is about two weeks longer than they usually sit in the camera. I like the instant gratification of a digital camera and usually watch a slide show of the days events while I am writing the blog. In the last two weeks we have taken some pretty cute pictures of our kids and I have either been too tired or sick to take them off the camera, until tonight.

I took the kids to the South Florida Fair a few weeks ago where they had the opportunity to feed and pet animals. This is Sydney's favorite past time. She loves animals, any kind of animal and having the opportunity to feed them is just icing on the cake. She fed rabbits that weighed more than Jordan, a goat, a sheep, a deer, a llama, an alpaca, and a camel. Several of these animals managed to lick her face from one side to the other which just made her laugh and cheer.

The big girls have thoroughly embraced their big girl beds and the butterfly pillows that sit on them. Bed time has become an enjoyable part of our daily routine with the girls enjoying a few stories and then quietly talking or playing alone in their rooms until they fall asleep. Jordan is even benefiting from this new bedtime routine and gets several stories on the big bed before being deposited in her bed for the evening.

Lior discovered the air intake for the air conditioner and now spends a good part of her free time trying to get her clothes sucked into the vent.

The girls accompanied me to the park this morning where I got them good and tired. Jordan was tired and cranky before we even got there and did not enjoy herself as much as I expected her to.
The big girls had fun climbing, jumping and rolling down the "hills" in the park.

Looking at these pictures reminds me that Sydney and Lior could use a good haircut.

Health update

I am on the mend. I do not feel one hundred percent, I do not sound one hundred percent but I am on the mend. I only filled up half a Publix bag with tissues today, so I must feel better. I was able to get some real rest thanks to my wonderful husband who brought the kids to school this morning and my wonderful mother who took the girls yesterday afternoon and Jordan to Mommy & Me this morning. Rest is what I needed to get better.
Sydney feels much better because she is not whinning at me constantly anymore. She has been laughing and giggling again. It is nice to see her smile, both Matt and I missed our happy little girl. Jordan is very-very cranky which makes me think she does not feel well. I hope it is just her teeth that hurt her, her gums are so swollen it hurts just to look in her mouth. Lior seems just fine a little touch of the sniffles but her mood seems the same. Now Matt needs to stay healthy and we may be on our way back to a healthy home.

It's my turn

It is my turn to be sick. Aren't I lucky? I can not even blame Sydney because I just have a nasty head cold that has settled in my chest and I can not breathe. Sydney was never really congested and had a very bad fever. It has been way to long since Dan and his family were here so I can not even blame them!
I very rarely get sick, Matt is usually the parent that gets side lined by whatever illness the kids have. I think since my sleep was so disrupted when Sydney was sick I did not have a fighting chance against this latest round. Hopefully, it ends with me.
Matt was really wonderful and allowed me to sleep this weekend. It helps that the girls slept until almost eight thirty on Saturday after their Shabbot event at school. We all had such a nice time, the girls especially. This morning I did not get out of bed until almost ten and got to spend the better part of the day in bed resting. My parents volunteered to take the kids to look at animals at the wetlands so Matt and I could get stuff done around the house. Matt took complete advantage and finally fixed the garbage disposal and mowed most of the lawn. We were told that our girls were excellent on the walk and enjoyed seeing two really big alligators.
It does not surprise me that the girls were excellent on the walk. Yesterday when we were at the zoo the girls walked almost the entire time and never strayed, when I said stop, they stopped. They were even fantastic tonight at dinner. My parents took us out for Sushi and the kids sat throught the entire meal without issue. Lior told us she wanted to eat salad, edamame and soup with chopsticks, but not dumplings because they are too hot. The girls ate everything we ordered for them and more, Lior tasted raw salmon and Sydney tasted an eel roll. We are creating little gourmet's! Pretty soon we will not be able to afford to take them out to dinner!
If this cold sticks around and if I continue to feel lousy they will be eating a lot more take out because I have no energy to cook.
